Review FENDER Precision Bass Neck Wide Roasted Maple

The **Fender American Professional II Precision Bass Neck (Model #MX20127765) in Roasted Maple** is a meticulously crafted instrument that embodies the timeless elegance and punchy tone of the legendary Precision Bass, now elevated with modern precision and refined playability. This neck represents the pinnacle of Fender s commitment to quality, featuring a **roasted maple fingerboard** that offers a warm, rich hue with a subtle golden undertone, adding a touch of vintage charm while maintaining the durability and responsiveness of maple. The fingerboard is adorned with **21 jumbo frets**, precisely spaced and polished to a glass-like sheen, ensuring effortless sliding between notes and a buttery-smooth playing experience. The **24.75" scale length** strikes a perfect balance between the deep, resonant tone of a longer scale and the agility of a shorter one, making it ideal for both slapping and fingerstyle techniques.

Beneath the roasted maple, the **glued-in mahogany neck** provides a robust backbone, delivering a full, balanced tone with pronounced low-end punch and a touch of midrange warmth. The neck profile is a refined **medium "C" shape**, offering a comfortable fit for players with varying hand sizes, whether they prefer a slightly thicker feel for chugging power chords or a slimmer contour for intricate solos. The **21.5" bolt-on neck joint** ensures stability and minimal setup adjustments over time, while the **modern 3-bolt design** enhances durability and reduces the risk of warping. The **fret wire is nickel-silver**, providing a bright, articulate tone with excellent sustain, and the **fret ends are rounded**, reducing the chance of string breakage and improving overall durability.

The **American Professional II series** builds upon Fender s legacy with subtle yet meaningful upgrades, including the **contoured body** that cradles the instrument securely, allowing for effortless left-handed playing and reduced fatigue during long sessions. The **roasted maple neck** not only adds aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the instrument s tonal character, offering a slightly warmer and more nuanced response compared to traditional polished maple. Whether you re a seasoned bassist looking to upgrade your rig or a newcomer seeking a versatile, high-quality instrument, this Precision Bass neck delivers an exceptional blend of heritage, innovation, and playability. Perfect for genres ranging from classic rock and funk to modern metal and jazz, this neck is a testament to Fender s enduring craftsmanship and the enduring appeal of the Precision Bass.

**Pros and Cons of buying a Fender American Professional II Precision Bass Neck (Model MX20127765, Roasted Maple)**

### **Pros**

1. **Premium Build Quality** The American Professional II series is known for its solid construction, featuring a solid maple neck with a roasted finish that adds warmth and depth to the tone. The neck profile is designed for comfort and playability, making it suitable for both beginners and professionals.

2. **Superior Tone and Sustain** Roasted maple necks are prized for their rich, balanced tone with enhanced midrange and a touch of warmth. The precision carving of the neck ensures excellent intonation and sustain, which is crucial for bass players who demand clarity and projection.

3. **Comfortable Neck Profile** The neck profile is slightly thicker than a standard "C" profile, offering better string stability and reduced fret buzz. This makes it ideal for players who prefer a more substantial feel without sacrificing agility.

4. **High-Quality Hardware** The bass comes with Fender s reliable hardware, including a smooth-boring bridge and tuners that maintain stability. The roasted maple neck is paired with a solid alder or ash body (depending on the full model), which complements the neck s tone beautifully.

5. **Resale Value** Fender s American Professional II series holds its value well compared to many other basses, making it a smart investment if you plan to upgrade later.

6. **Versatility** The Precision Bass design is a classic, offering a wide range of tones from punchy, aggressive lows to smooth, rounded mids. The roasted maple neck enhances this versatility by adding subtle harmonic richness.

7. **Durability** The solid wood construction ensures longevity, and the roasted finish resists wear better than some lighter stains, making it a practical choice for frequent players.

### **Cons**

1. **Higher Price Point** Compared to entry-level or student basses, the American Professional II series is more expensive. While it s not the most costly Fender model, it still represents a significant investment, especially for beginners.

2. **Weight** Solid maple necks and bodies can be heavier than laminated or lighter wood alternatives. This may not be an issue for all players, but those who prefer lighter instruments might find it tiring during long sessions.

3. **Limited Customization** If you re looking for a bass with unique features (e.g., active electronics, exotic woods, or custom finishes), this model offers fewer options compared to some boutique or semi-custom basses.

4. **Maintenance** Solid wood is more prone to warping or drying out over time if not properly cared for. Players in humid or dry climates may need to invest in a humidifier or conditioner to maintain the neck s integrity.

5. **Not Ideal for All Playing Styles** While the Precision Bass is versatile, players who specialize in slap bass or heavily palm-muted styles might find the roasted maple neck slightly less responsive than a lighter wood (e.g., ash or alder) in those contexts.

6. **Potential for Overkill** If you re a beginner or an intermediate player who doesn t need professional-grade components, the extra cost may not be justified until you re certain about your long-term commitment to bass playing.

### **Conclusion and Recommendation**

The **Fender American Professional II Precision Bass Neck (Roasted Maple)** is an excellent choice for players who prioritize **tone, playability, and build quality** without the premium price tag of a fully custom or boutique bass. It s particularly well-suited for:

- **Serious students or intermediate players** who want a reliable, high-quality instrument that will grow with their skills.

- **Professional or semi-professional musicians** who demand consistency, durability, and a rich, articulate tone.

- **Players who prefer a warmer, slightly darker tone** with enhanced midrange and sustain.

- **Those who value Fender s reputation for craftsmanship** and the resale value of the series.

However, if you re on a tight budget, prefer lighter instruments, or need specific features (e.g., active electronics, unique finishes), you might consider alternatives like:

- **Fender Player Series Precision Bass** (more affordable, similar tone).

- **Squier Classic Vibe Precision Bass** (budget-friendly but still high-quality).

- **Boutique basses with lighter woods** (e.g., ash or alder) if weight is a concern.

**Final Recommendation:**

If you can afford it and are looking for a **long-term, high-performance Precision Bass** with a **warm, articulate tone** and **premium build quality**, the **Fender American Professional II Precision Bass Neck (Roasted Maple)** is an outstanding choice. It strikes a balance between professional-grade components and accessibility, making it one of the best all-around Precision Bass models available. For most players, the investment is well worth it for the tone, durability, and playability it provides.

Details:

I purchased this neck directly from FENDER as a replacement, about 5 years ago. Free Shipping. The nut width is 1 3/4. Its an MIM and has a satin finish on the back like American Pro II necks.

Its wider than my liking. Of course the heel width is Fender standard. I think paid $359 plus shipping. I added used Fender tuners but never did anything else with it.
